Every day, diverse users and business owners use Yelp to meet a variety of needs. Having a diverse workforce designing features and partnering with local business owners helps us achieve our mission.
Our commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive work environment
Employees have the right to come to work every day and feel a sense of belonging, see role models who look like them, and have the same opportunities and chance to succeed. We commit to:
Increasing representation at every level
In late 2020, we welcomed our newest director to Yelp’s board, Tony Wells, as we further diversify and refresh the Board’s collective expertise.
Using a diverse slate approach to our interview process
This approach ensures that hiring managers consider underrepresented talent when interviewing for open positions.
Turning away business from offensive clients
We recognize the need to address offensive clients and prospective clients who use racially-charged or other abusive language in their communication with our employees. We do not want their business, and will not tolerate hate speech directed at our employees.
Continuing the conversation
There’s always more work to do. We designed a company-wide training curriculum on systemic racism and institutional bias, allyship, and more. The goal of this program is to create fluency around diversity, inclusion, and belonging topics to make sure we’re supporting our employees in the most proactive way.
Creating a space where everyone belongs
We cultivate a sense of belonging through company-supported employee resource and affinity groups.
Yelp Employee Resource Groups (YERGs)
We cultivate our diverse interests through Yelp Employee Resource Groups (YERGs). All employees are welcome to all groups! YERGs are voluntary, employee-led communities that serve as a resource for employees with shared social identities, characteristics or life experiences (for example, protected classes such as race, sex, disability, etc.), as well as their allies.

Diversity at Yelp
In late 2020, we released our latest Diversity at Yelp report. We still have work to do, but our consistent progress shows that our efforts are having a positive impact. Unique perspectives lead our people’s success, so representation at every level matters. From 2019 to 2020, the number of underrepresented minority (URM) managers increased 12.9%.
Welcome New YERGs: YelpAbility & Mental Health + Neurodiversity
Some dimensions of diversity that aren’t talked about as often include visible and invisible disabilities, neurodiversity, and mental health. With the help of strong employee leaders, we recently introduced two new Yelp employee resource groups (YERGs): YelpAbility and Mental Health + Neurodiversity.
Representation: A Nuanced Approach to Authentic Leadership
We often talk about the importance of representation in leadership and how that can make a difference in an employee’s and organization’s future. In today’s climate, when the LGBTQ+ community is still fighting for equality across the globe, it’s even more crucial we hear from leaders in the community.
Transgender Day of Visibility 2021: Language Matter
From our national celebration titles (Latinx Heritage Month) to how we address colleagues in our virtual meetings (y’all, folks, everybody, etc.), the language we use is crucial in defining an inclusive environment at Yelp. We continue to explore new vocabulary, have necessary conversations, and push the envelope on what’s considered the norm.
